Biography

Hi, I am Ray Sherrard. I retired in 1994 after 28 years as a Special Agent with the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS, part of the United States Treasury Department. I spent the majority of my career investigating high-level narcotics traffickers for income tax evasion and money-laundering.

I also taught at the Federal Law Enforcement Training School and was the first IRS Representative at the El Paso Intelligence Center. I designed the belt badge worn by all Special Agents and wrote the badge history of My Department.

I have served as the Vice-President of the National Assn of Treasury Agents, and Vice-President of the Federal Criminal Investigators Assn, and have held office in the California Narcotic Officers Assn, and belong to the FLEOA.

I am a staff writer for POLICE COLLECTOR NEWS, the leading police insignia collectors journal, and I write a monthly column for that publication entitled ALL THINGS FEDERAL.

I have written, or co-written five books, including:
THE CENTURIONS SHIELD - A History of The LAPD (With Keith and Jake Bushey)
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT PATCHES, and two prior editions
BADGES OF THE UNITED STATES MARSHALS (With George Stumpf)

I also serve as a story consultant and technical advisor to the entertainment industry, and have contributed to many movie and TV productions, including:
THE UNTOUCHABLES, HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, MIDNIGHT RUN, MURDER IN THE FIRST etc.
